20 DecMercury Retailer Training Program

Richard Hernandez accepts Master Diploma

Mercury’s first Retailer Training Program with H-E-B has successfully concluded!

“This training allowed me to peel back the layers of the onion and really learn the moving parts of the company. And to see many times more than not, there is rationale and reason for why things are done the way they are done,” says Richard Hernandez.

Hernandez is the first retailer participant. He’s an associate buyer from H-E-B.

Participants learned every aspect of the business

For two weeks, participants learned every aspect of the business from our end. They covered everything from what it takes to set-up a new store before it’s opened through learning our book ordering, magazine and UPC processes and more.

As part of the training course, participants met with experts from each of our departments and spent time learning what they do. They also had the opportunity to tour stores and see processes implemented at the store level.

Instruction during Retailer Training Program

“This training has given me a new appreciation of understanding your business and for that, it makes me a better buyer,” says Hernandez. “Now I know all of the things that it takes for your organization to keep us serviced and merchandised on a daily basis.”

At the end of the course, participants were tested. When he successfully passed, Hernandez was presented with an honorary Master Diploma.

This is the first time Mercury has conducted a program like this. It was successful thanks to people like Steve Crabb, Director of Quality Merchandising and Training Operations, and everyone who participated and shared their knowledge.

“I have a newfound appreciation of what Mercury does for H-E-B,” says Hernandez. “This knowledge is value added. I appreciate everyone’s time and the knowledge that what I’ve learned here is invaluable to helping me continue in my buying role with H-E-B.”

18 OctTara Nave — Director of Accounts Receivables & Retailer Systems

Once all merchandise has been received, picked and delivered, then the work begins for Tara Nave and her team. Tara and her staff are responsible for cash collection and application, transaction reconciliation, proof of delivery, and imaging for nearly 2 million transactions a year.

Tara is a dedicated employee who treats each dollar as if it were owed to her personally. Under
Tara’s leadership, we have the best accounts receivable department in the industry. Our accounts are reconciled and balances are collected in a timely matter. Due to Tara’s vast knowledge of operations and the DPS system, she often assists with issues outside of her department.

Tara was born in Cumberland, Maryland and grew up in Bedford, Pennsylvania. In 1981, she moved to Texas when the Air Force transferred her husband, Kipp Nave, to San Antonio. The Nave’s left Texas in 1990 for a transfer to Virginia, but returned to San Antonio in 1994 to make Texas their permanent home.

Tara began working in the magazine industry in 1981 as an Administrative Assistant to the General Manager of Weiner News in San Antonio. While in Virginia, she worked as an RDA consultant and District Office Manager for Danka. Upon her arrival back to San Antonio in 1994, Tara rejoined Weiner News as the Office Manager. Weiner News was purchased by our existing company in 1996 making Tara one of our first San Antonio employees. Tara remained as the Office Manager for Lone Star Periodicals (now Mercury Retail Services) until the consolidation of seven distribution centers into San Antonio. At that time, she was promoted to Accounts Receivable Manager and later became Director of Accounts Receivable and Retailer Systems.

Tara thinks the consolidation of account receivables from the seven distribution centers into San Antonio was the biggest challenge she’s ever faced. While she jokingly says the best part of the job is “working for Gary Korn of course,” we know that Tara is motivated by the daily challenges of the job. Tara said she is very proud to work with such a great account receivables team.

Tara enjoys looking for that very special antique, reading and vacationing to new places; a cruise to Alaska a few years ago was fantastic. In addition, her favorite food is an Italian sub made only on the East Coast. When asked if she had any words of wisdom to pass along, Tara responded with “Work hard and strive to be your best.” Those who know Tara can confirm she always works hard and always strives to be her best. Please join us in congratulating our Spotlight Employee of the month, Tara Nave!
